Healthy eating while you are traveling can be a bit more challenging, often because you are eating at restaurants and on the go more frequently than when you are at home. Finding simple solutions to cutting the calories of common restaurant food and how to find healthier alternatives to fast food can help you maintain your weight loss while traveling. You can avoid regaining weight and feel your best by following a few simple steps.
What to Order
In general, it is best to avoid fast food while traveling because the food served contains unnecessary calories and is often packed with preservatives, salt and fat content that you don’t need. Even salads can have hidden calories when you order from a fast food restaurant. Sit down restaurants are an option that gives you more control over the food that you eat. When you are given a choice on side dishes, make sure you make the right ordering choices and opt for the freshest types of vegetables for your sides rather than mashed potatoes or other carbs. Side salads are a good option, but make sure that you get the dressing on the side to reduce your calories and fat consumption.
Stopping by a local health food store is also an option while traveling. You can find shops that sell organic produce in almost any region. Pack a cooler with some basic healthy snacks like fruit, sliced veggies and nuts for snacking if you are driving to your destination. Avoiding snacks that are high in sugar can benefit you in other ways, as well. Sugar spikes and drops can cause crankiness and premature hunger in the entire family, so make sure that you opt for whole foods like fruit, cheese and whole grain muffins as much as possible while traveling. It is also advisable to avoid any low-fat or fat free foods since they can have higher amounts of sugar to enhance the flavor of the foods.

This is the Information Age; so many restaurants have menus online. People should research their upcoming vacation spots so that they evaluate which restaurants have the healthiest options. Depending on the nature of the vacation destination, the place might also have health food stores, healthy restaurants, and other such places that cater to the health-conscious tourist. Many restaurants even have special low-calorie or healthy sections in their menus, so eating healthy may be as simple as perusing a menu. Speaking of simplicity, many hotels also offer healthy options via room service, continental breakfast, or in-house restaurant. This information is often available on the hotel’s website, so people should know what healthy amenities hotels offer before traveling so they can, if necessary, select another healthier hotel. Sometimes hotels and restaurants can be misleading to draw in your business. I have found reviews from other travelers to be the most honest and unbiased form of information. I recently took a trip out west and found a great site called Gogobot that listed reviews for Las Vegas hotels regarding not only the amenities and services, but also the restaurants in the nearby area. This made it easier than ever to plan out my trip both in and out of the hotel to ensure I was maintain my healthy lifestyle even in the buffet ridden city.
Stay On Track
Eating is an important aspect of maintaining weight loss but you will also want to make sure that you keep beverages as healthy as possible to avoid weight gain while traveling. Water should be your first choice throughout the day. Water will help you stay hydrated on your trip and provide you with the energy you need to explore the area with your family. Bring along some caffeine free herbal tea bags for evenings if you want to add some flavor to your beverages without adding a lot of calories.
Taking along a small slow cooker is also an option if you want to cook your own meals. Most foods can easily be prepared in a slow cooker and you won’t have to spend a lot of time preparing meals while on vacation since the slow cooker will do most of the work while you are enjoying your day.
With just a little planning, you can stay on track and enjoy your vacation without sabotaging your weight loss.
